Can This Form A System Of Practice?

The system of practice being promoted here is not that of a closed, personality driven offices. We believe that such offices are not really producing good quality architecture.

In today's complex world, there is an upper limit on what a very talented person can produce in his/her office. There are too many issues to contend with: Energy, climate, sustainability, profitability and so on. It is a foolish claim for most architects to state that they have the wherewithall to handle them all on their own. Cooperation is needed.

This is how offices of the future would work: The architect who initiates a design will form a temporal organization for a particular project and build up a daisy-chain of fellow consultants and assistants who will work on the project at hand. The same consultants/assistants may or may not work on other projects. Each consultant in that daisy chain would in a similar fashion build up their own "daisy-chains". Responsibilities and rewards will be shared along the daisy chain. Each architect therefore would dismantle the closed office he/she currently has, and instead have very small offices ... maybe with just one or two more people (if at all). The rest of the work being farmed across to the daisy-chain.

At a first superficial glance, it may look as if this is a rebellion against recognition of talent. But that is completely wrong. Architects will definitely get acknowledged and recognized for their work using this system.

Curiously enough, such offices will highlight the true capability of individuals even though each are involved in a cooperative process to do their work.

Exactly the same effect is seen in open source software. For e.g. The world has sat up and recognized the efforts of Richard Stallman (Free Software Foundation), Linus Trovalds (Linux, GIT), Brian Cohen (BitTorrent) .... and all of them did their work cooperatively along with others.

And such offices will make money too. Mr. Sabu Francis has written a blog post on this point here.

The question therefore probably should be "Can we avoid such a system of practice in such complex times?''
